Expert tip – High-altitude mountaineering

When it comes to mountaineering clothing, the layering principle is the be-all and end-all. This is particularly true for high-altitude mountaineering and alpine winter tours, where weather conditions, temperature and physical exertion are constantly changing. During active phases or in warm temperatures, the middle layer – which provides light insulation (= 1st layer) – is often sufficient.
During periods of rest or in low temperatures at high altitudes, Primaloft or down clothing is best worn as a warm mid-layer (= layer 2). A robust and breathable hardshell jacket (= layer 3) is always essential. It protects against wind and weather, as well as chafing from rucksacks and climbing harnesses.
